Historically, it served as a crucial site for pioneering Murray cod breeding techniques between 1976 and 1984, establishing it as a premier inland fishery.

Today, it is a popular destination for visitors and the annual Lake Charlegrark Country Music Marathon.

Historical Highlights

Warmwater Fisheries Research (1976–1984): The lake was home to a ground breaking project that developed successful methods for breeding Murray cod in captivity, which were previously unknown.

Stocking Foundation: Young cod bred at Lake Charlegrark were released into various Victorian lakes, rivers, and dams, forming the basis of modern cod fisheries.

Drought and Recovery: Following a severe drought in the 2000s that affected the Wimmera region, the lake was restocked with Murray cod through efforts by Fisheries Victoria and local angling clubs, often using funds raised by relocating fish from drying local lakes.

Development: The area has evolved from a simple fishing spot into a managed reserve, featuring a caravan park with cabins, powered sites, and, as of 2018, significant, community-led upgrades to infrastructure.

Current Significance

Tourism & Events: The Lake Charlegrark Country Music Marathon is a key annual event held in February.  The event has been running for 32 years!  It’s one of the region’s biggest eventsand draws thousands with live country music, markets, food stalls, and family-friendly fun.

Recreation: Lake Charlegrark is a 40-hectare natural lake renowned for recreational fishing (cod and redfin), boating, waterskiing, kayaking, and camping.

Management: The area is managed as a natural reserve, with efforts to maintain its health amidst increasing popularity, supported by Parks Victoria and the West Wimmera Shire Council.
